 BEHIND THE ART

Who am I?

Hello! Welcome to my blog! I’m Dahlia Co, a stay at home mom to two boys and a wife to a wonderful, supportive husband. I’m also a graphic designer, photojournalist, craft & mixed media art addict, and memory keeper who loves to design & create for as long as I can remember! As a self-taught artist, I create with the relentless passion to share my creative gifts with others, hoping to inspire, motivate, and to connect with your heart…

What does ‘Makita’ mean?

I am a first generation Filipino American who takes pride in my heritage. I come from a family background of hardworking, ambitious, entrepreneurs who have a passion to work with their hands and use their creativity for a living. The word MAKITA is a Filipino term that means to SEE, DISCOVER, or WITNESS which describes my love to explore the world around me and celebrate the life that I’ve been blessed with.

Is there a story behind my art?

Ever since childhood, I found that journaling has always been my way of coping with my deepest emotions, fears and struggles as I faced so many challenges growing up. It gave me a way to escape and let go while I strived to figure out and understand life on my own. Fast forward, after the birth of my youngest child, I began blogging in 2007 as a way to journal about life as a stay at home mom and my discovery of digital scrapbooking, I also became self-taught in various types of arts and crafts such as paper crafting, crochet, knitting, floral designing and painting. Over the next years, I became part of various creative teams in the digital scrapbooking community and also briefly became a designer for Little Dreamer Designs, which I recently rejoined as part of the creative team. During the last few years, I took a certificate program in Graphic Design which gave me a lot of technical design skills but, deep inside I was hungry for something more creative. Then I discovered mixed media + art journaling! These doors opened up a whole new world to me and I was hooked! I love freely expressing my joys, sorrows, and revelations in a fashion that is not bound by rules or boundaries. It’s been an exciting journey so far as I continue to discover my passion for the arts and what truly makes me the artist that I am. It gives me the opportunity to truly express my heart and soul and hopefully encourage others with a message of faith, hope, and love…

What type of artist am I?

Over the last few years, my journey as a mixed media artist has continued to lead me to so many levels of  growth and opportunity. I am constantly seeking and learning and growing. I find that I love creating abstract, eclectic, and soulful images and always finding ways to try different methods and techniques. I love using a variety of mediums, but my favorite so far is acrylic paint, water soluble crayons, and oil pastels. One thing is for sure, I do love COLOR, TEXTURE, AND LAYERS.

Makita Studio is a special place where I hope to inspire and encourage others through my creations. My desire is to make beautiful art and designs with a soulful message that will reflect my joy of living life and appreciating the gifts of love, peace, and happiness that we often overlook in the everyday. Everyone has a story to tell and here is where I can share the story of my life as an artist as it unfolds. So hopefully, you’ll join me in this journey and be blessed!
